As far as we can tell, there’s little if anything wrong the E92 M3. However, according to a post on Bimmerfile, that small point will not be stopping BMW from offering a Competition Package on 2011 models. What goes into a Competition Pack? We’re not certain, and Bimmerfile can only speculate (bigger wheels, brakes, maybe). Knowing that much, we’ll join ‘em. But first, a little history.

Way back in 2005, BMW began a Competition Package for the E46 M3. Included were upgraded wheels, larger brakes, stickier tires,a firmer suspension and a revised Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system identical to the one on the hardcore M3 CSL. In addition beats by dre, the E46 M3 Comp Pack also came with a quicker steering ratio. Inside, a bit of fussing took place in the form of Alcantara steering wheel and hand brake coverings and the steering wheel saw a few buttons (multi-function controls and cruise) deleted in favor of a DSC M button.

Will the E92 Competition Package feature similar upgrades? Hard to say, but we’ll guess yes. For their part, Bimmerfile is speculating that larger wheels and brakes will be part of the package (at least), along with an upgraded interior. The E46 Comp Pack added about $4,000 to the price of the M3. You can be certain that this number will increase when the new package drops. Is there any chance that the Competition Pack will offer a few of the goodies found on the hardcore M3 GTS (pictured above)? Once again, maybe. Improved wheels, brakes and tires being the safest bet.

One curious note: there’s a 7MA option pack attached to the Competition Package code (ZCP) that might simply mean a manual transmission option, or (according to Bimmerfile) could be an upgraded exhaust system good for a few ponies more. We’ll keep you posted, though we should get some clarification right around Geneva.

The Note’s Must-Reads for Friday, May 4, 2012

The Note’s Must-Reads are a round-up of today’s political headlines and stories from ABC News and the top U.S. newspapers. Posted Monday through Friday right here at www.abcnews.com

Compiled by ABC News’ Jayce Henderson and Amanda VanAllen

PRESIDENT OBAMA:
The Los Angeles Times’ Michael Memoli, Christi Parsons and Kathleen Hennessey: “Obama campaign tailors message for key states and voters” If Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign was part cultural phenomenon Office Project Key, part national movement, his second may look a bit more modest — like a series of well-run Senate campaigns. LINK

USA Today’s Aamer Madhani and Richard Wolf: “Obama pulls out all stops on campuses to reclaim support” After winning the youth vote in 2008 by nearly 2-to-1, the Obama campaign has doubled down on efforts to expand the base of young voters who were key to propelling the president to the White House. Over the past year, the campaign says, it has recruited thousands of young volunteers to help with voter outreach efforts on campuses and across the country. LINK

Politico’s Edward -Issac Dovere and Jennifer Epstein: “GOP pounds Obama on Chen case” President Barack Obama wanted people to talk about foreign policy this week — but not like this. Two days after the president flew to Afghanistan for a carefully constructed trip to press the image of a strong foreign policy leader — he’s ending two wars, he ordered the raid that killed Osama bin Laden — he’s caught in a thorny foreign policy situation his administration didn’t ask for, tried hard to avoid and that risks setting up the president as a lead negotiator unable to close the deal. LINK

MITT ROMNEY:
ABC News’ Matthew Dowd: “Romney Needs a Better Brand” Branding is as important in politics as it is for products in the commercial marketplace and our daily lives and relationships (but that’s a column for another day). This election will be contested around certain values and the economy. Right now, Mitt Romney has a slight lead over President Obama over who is best to handle the economy. LINK

The Wall Street Journal’s Neil King Jr. and Laura Meckler: “Math Challenge for Romney” Mitt Romney’s campaign says it has many routes to the 270 votes needed for victory in the Electoral College this fall. But almost all of them rely on a difficult feat: Winning at least six states that went for President Barack Obama in 2008. Spot Mr. Romney the five biggest swing states the Democrat won four years ago—Florida Buy Windows 7 Product Key, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina and Indiana—and the Republican still wouldn’t be guaranteed the White House. To win, he would need to also carry at least one other state that went to Mr. Obama four years ago. LINK

The Washington Post’s Dan Balz and Philip Rucker: “Romney faces a narrow path to 270 electoral votes, but his team remains optimistic” Mitt Romney faces a narrow path to the presidency, one that requires winning back states that President Obama took from Republicans in 2008 and that has few apparent opportunities for Romney to steal away traditionally Democratic states. LINK

The Washington Times’ Luke Rosiak: “Romney super PAC donors put at credit card risk” The political fund that has raised more than $50 million to support Mitt Romney’s bid for the presidency has been collecting money online with a system so insecure that it exposes donors’ credit card information to even casual snoopers. LINK

NEWT GINGRICH:
ABC News’ Elicia Dover: “Newt Gingrich Still Thinks Mitt Romney Lied During Campaign” Former Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said Mitt Romney “said things that weren’t true Windows 7 64 bit key,” over the course of the campaign. Shown a new ad from the Obama campaign during an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer Thursday - a clip reel of Gingrich’s slams on Romney during the primary season - Gingrich laughed and said, “You have a rough-and-tumble primary season and you’ll get words like that.” LINK

VOTERS / OTHER:
The New York Times’ Sabrina Tavernise: “4 Years Later, Race Is Still Issue for Some Voters” This is the land of die-hard Democrats — mill workers, coal miners and union members. They have voted party line for generations, forming a reliable constituency for just about any Democrat who decides to run for office. LINK

New York Daily News’ Aliyah Shahid: “Mitt Romney, President Obama in virtual tie in Ohio, Florida: Poll” Mitt Romney is hot on President Obama’s heels. A new Quinnipiac University poll shows the presumed Republican presidential candidate in a virtual tie with Obama in the key, battleground states of Florida and Ohio. Just a month ago, Obama was ahead in both states. LINK

The Hill’s Vicki Needham: “Obama, Romney brace for April jobs report; slow growth expected” The White House and Mitt Romney’s campaign are bracing for a new jobs report Friday that will set the tone for this fall’s general election battle. The report for April is expected to be tepid, with most analysts forecasting job gains of 120,00 to 170,000—not enough to significantly lower the unemployment rate. LINK

Biden apologizes to Obama for same-sex marriage re

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Vice President Joe Biden has apologized to President Barack Obama for remarks backing gay marriage that forced Obama’s hand to publicly declare his own support for same-sex marriage, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Biden made the apology in the Oval Office on Wednesday, before Obama’s own announcement in a television interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts in which he said he believed same-sex couples should be allowed to wed, the sources said.

It was the first time a sitting president had ever publicly backed same-sex marriage and his remarks quickly reverberated on the presidential campaign trial.

His likely Republican opponent in the November 6 election, Mitt Romney replica watches, does not support gay marriage, and it is likely to prove a divisive issue in the campaign, pleasing Obama’s political base but also energizing those opposed to gay rights.

Obama made clear that Biden’s comments during a television interview three days earlier had forced him to go public, but also stressed that he did not think it had done any damage.

“Would I have preferred to have done this in my own way? In my own terms without there being a lot of notice to everybody that this is where we were going? Sure,” Obama told ABC. “But all’s well that ends well.”

Biden, who has a reputation for going off-script, unexpectedly said in a television interview that he was comfortable with gay marriage.

That immediately put the spotlight on Obama replica watches, who had been awkwardly fending off the question by claiming that his position was “evolving.”

“The president has been the leader on this issue from day one and the Vice President never intended to distract from that cheap replica watches,” said Biden spokeswoman Kendra Barkoff.

Dr. John and Soul Fire for the Gulf

By the time the SoulFire4TheGulf participants arrived in New Orleans Tattoo Of Tattoo Machine, they had spent days in ceremony on the north shore at the Mandeville Mounds (Fountainebleau St. Park). It showed. A three hour drum circle passed in a flash Tattoo Ink Supplies, with Mac Rebbenack a/k/a Dr. John, Sunpie Barnes and Papa Mali joining the Grandmothers of all nations and the Native American coalition of elders in Turtle Women Rising.

After Mardi Gras Indians including Big Chief David Montana of the Wichita Hunters and Big Chief Little Walter of the Creole Wild West joined in Tattoo Kits Free Shipping, a second line 100 strong paraded from Armstrong Park through Jackson Square to a healing of the waters ceremony at the banks of the Mississippi River. Dr. John and Mz. imani presided over the ceremony that was attended and blessed by over by Lakota Elder Avrol Looking Horse, GM Margaret Behan & Paula Horne.

The event coincided with the two-year anniversary of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Mz. imani coordinated the event; she was easy to spot in her Listen to Grandmother tee shirt from Turtle Women Rising. Dr. John and sculptor Bellavia have created Orisha Dolls to help fund the Soul Fire elders’ travel.

Cheyenne Arapaho Grandmother Margaret Behan told me she traveled from Montana, near the Canadian border, to participate the healing ceremony for the waters. At the end of one of the prayers, a woman in the circle announced: “The Great Mother is on the move,” and the fountains in the lagoon came alive. Unscheduled, but right on time.

T.S. Eliot Scholars Give High Marks to Obama’s An

President Obama can add literary analysis to the skills  section of his resume.

This week, Vanity Fair published excerpts from Obama’s letters to two girlfriends from his early 20s. Prominent among them was this section of a letter written to Alex McNear Buy Tattoo Gun, an undergrad at Occidental College with whom Obama had carried on a long-distance relationship from Columbia University  in New York. Near had mentioned she was writing a paper on T.S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land.”

Obama wrote to her:

I haven’t read “The Waste Land” for a year, and I never did bother to check all the footnotes. But I will hazard these statements — Eliot contains the same ecstatic vision which runs from Münzer to Yeats. However, he retains a grounding in the social reality/order of his time. Facing what he perceives as a choice between ecstatic chaos and lifeless mechanistic order, he accedes to maintaining a separation of asexual purity and brutal sexual reality. And he wears a stoical face before this. Read his essay on Tradition and the Individual Talent, as well as Four Quartets, when he’s less concerned with depicting moribund Europe, to catch a sense of what I speak. Remember how I said there’s a certain kind of conservatism which I respect more than bourgeois liberalism — Eliot is of this type. Of course, the dichotomy he maintains is reactionary, but it’s due to a deep fatalism, not ignorance. (Counter him with Yeats or Pound, who, arising from the same milieu, opted to support Hitler and Mussolini.) And this fatalism is born out of the relation between fertility and death, which I touched on in my last letter — life feeds on itself.  A fatalism I share with the western tradition at times. You seem surprised at Eliot’s irreconcilable ambivalence; don’t you share this ambivalence yourself, Alex?

Although nearly everyone at ABC News has nuanced and well-developed views on Yeats, and while none of us had to look up Thomas Müntzer on Wikipedia, we nonetheless decided it would be fun to ask Eliot scholars for their  opinions on Obama’s analysis.

(Plus, as a 20 year-old writing about Eliot to his girlfriend, we wondered whether any of this might be intellectual showboating  or mere puffery.)

Two experts, however, were impressed with Obama’s insight.

Here’s  Anthony Cuda, an English professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro who has published multiple books on Yeats, co-edited “The Complete Prose of T. S. Eliot. Vol. II, 1919-1925,” and has written  the forthcoming “Passions of Modernism: Eliot, Yeats, Woolf, and Mann”:

I was impressed and delighted when a friend drew my attention to this passage yesterday.  The young man who wrote those lines, I thought to myself, was not simply aware of Eliot’s work, which is rare enough; he wasn’t even regurgitating the standard college response to it, which is even more rare, especially given the difficulty of poems like “The Waste Land” and “Four Quartets.” Instead, he was responding with verve and originality to one of the vital energies in Eliot’s work, the ecstatic spiritual vision, and to the troubled social realities that helped to shape it. Who cares if it’s opaque or mildly inflated?  The prose of most intelligent young people is much worse. This is a student with whom I’d be happy to argue about Eliot.

And   Frances Dickey, an English professor at the University of Missouri and resident historian of the T.S. Eliot Society, on what Obama’s reading tells us about him:

Obama was an astute reader of “The Waste Land” and clearly understood Eliot’s aims as a poet and public figure.  I find it fascinating but not at all surprising that he was drawn to Eliot, who is a poet of exile and deracination.  Obama writes in another letter from the same time that he feels “Caught without a class Rotary Tattoo Machine, a structure, or tradition to support me.”  The same was true of Eliot when he wrote “The Waste Land.”  Kept from playing with the other children in his native St. Louis and considered a Southerner at Harvard, Eliot continued to feel like an outsider when he settled in London.  This poem was his attempt to express (among other ideas) his complicated relationship to traditions that he did not really consider his own.  Freedom to choose your tradition and way of life can be paralyzing:  How to choose between Christianity and Buddhism, between French and English poetry (if you’re Eliot) Tattoo Machine Supplies, or among African, Indonesian, Hawaiian, African-American, and Anglo-American cultures (if you’re Obama)?

Obama sympathetically sees that Eliot felt paralyzed by his cultural and political options.  Eliot settled for a kind of principled conservatism that Obama says he respects more than bourgeois liberalism:  rather than trying to invent himself from scratch, as Yeats or Blake did, Eliot tried to affirm some basic values rooted in history and tested by practice.  At the same time, in his search for order, Eliot didn’t go all the way down the road to fascism like his friend Ezra Pound.  He looked for a middle way that would do the least harm and keep the most continuity with the past.  Again, not at all surprising that Obama, always the pragmatist seeking compromise, felt an affinity with Eliot.

But Obama distinguishes himself from Eliot when he says “the dichotomy he maintains is reactionary”– in other words, Eliot perceived a starker divide between chaos and order than was really necessary.  By contrast, Obama suggests that he can live with the contradictions and competing demands of modern life.  The difference between them is very much a generational one. In fact, “The Waste Land” helped later generations of Americans see that they could integrate divergent beliefs and values without falling into chaos.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about the next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and judging by this latest set of spy photos, there’s still quite a bit of work to be done before the new Silver Arrow flagship makes its debut.

Like the earlier mules we’ve seen, the next-generation S-Class will likely use a larger Tattoo Supplies, more upright grille design, previewed by the F700 concept from a few years ago. Expect the Merc’s face to be chocked full of LED goodness, and under the hood, you can count on the standard range of gasoline, diesel and hybrid powertrains.

Inside, you can bet that the new S-Class will be as luxurious as ever, with Mercedes-Benz reportedly looking at cashmere and silk as possible cabin materials. Sounds plush. Look for the all-new S-Class to debut sometime in 2012.
